This week we are celebrating Feeding Tube Awareness week by helping spread awareness and understanding.
Tube feeding, also known as enteral nutrition, is away of providing nourishment to the body when a person is unable to eat or drink, or cannot eat or drink enough. There are different types of feeding tubes that deliver nutrition directly into the stomach or small intestine. These include a tube that is inserted through the nose to the stomach or jejunum (small Intestine), a tube inserted into the stomach or jejunum through a small opening in the abdominal wall, or a tube/button which is a skin level device which connects to a tube inserted into the stomach or jejunum. The feed can be delivered into the feeding tube by pump, gravity drip bag or syringe. Over three million people globally use a form of enteral nutrition!
There are many reasons why babies, children and adults may require a feeding tube and the medical conditions that can lead to feeding difficulties which can be severe enough to require tube feeding are varied, many of which aren’t visible.
